NNSA Begins Tritium Extraction Work at New Plant in South Carolina

For the first time in almost two decades, the Energy Department has the ability to manufacture tritium, an essential component in all the weapons that constitute the U.S. nuclear stockpile, the National Nuclear Security Administration announced yesterday. This past weekend, NNSA, which oversees the nation's nuclear weapons complex for DOE, started producing the gas at the agency's new Tritium Extraction Facility, which cost more than $500 million to build.
