Romania Returns Soviet-Origin HEU to Russia

With funding from the Energy Department, Romania has returned to Russia highly enriched uranium the country had acquired from the Soviet Union, DOE announced yesterday. Originally intended for a research nuclear reactor near Bucharest, the Romanian capital, the HEU was airlifted the day before to Russia, where it will be blended down and eventually used to supply fuel to civilian nuclear power plants.
