Senate Approves Bill Endorsing Further NATO Enlargement

The Senate approved legislation by unanimous consent last night that would endorse further NATO enlargement and help open the door for Albania, Croatia, Georgia and Macedonia to become members of the alliance. Dubbed the "NATO Freedom Consolidation Act of 2006" by its chief sponsor, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Richard Lugar (R-IN), the bill also would authorize millions of dollars in security assistance to those four countries under the NATO Participation Act of 1994.
