Top Senate Democrats are rethinking their approach on Iraq after Republican senators today defeated legislation that would have set a hard deadline to change the mission of U.S. troops deployed there. Introduced as an amendment to the fiscal year 2008 defense authorization bill, the measure would have fixed a firm date by which U.S. troops in Iraq would transition their current combat mission to Iraqi forces and shift to one focused on counterterrorism, force protection and training of Iraqi troops...
