White House Wants $6.5 Billion for NNSA Weapons Activities; $1.7 Billion for Nuclear Nonproliferation

The Bush administration is seeking $6.5 billion from Congress in fiscal year 2008 for Energy Department programs focused on keeping the nation's nuclear stockpile safe, secure and reliable, and another $1.7 billion to support nuclear nonproliferation efforts worldwide. Overall, the administration wants $24.3 billion for DOE in FY-08, or $705 million more than it sought for the department last year. The figure cannot be compared with an FY-07 enacted amount because lawmakers are still working on energy and water appropriations...
