Army internal review of AFC-TRADOC merger expected to be done this month

The Army is conducting an "internal review process" of the consolidation of Army Futures Command and Training and Doctrine Command, according to Rep. Rob Wittman (R-VA).

The service announced its Army Transformation Initiative on May 1 at the direction of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, which seeks to shed legacy programs and trim force structure. The transformation initiative proclaims AFC and TRADOC be merged into a single command “that aligns force generation, force design and force development under a single headquarters.”

Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George has said the new unified command will be known as “Transformation and Training Command,” and will be headquartered in Austin, TX -- currently home to AFC.

Virginia’s two senators and 10 representatives, in a June 3 letter to George and Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, wrote the service's senior leadership had informed the delegation that AFC would retain a four-star general in Austin, but TRADOC’s headquarters of Ft. Eustis, VA, would not retain a four-star general.

Additionally, the delegation wrote in that letter that other “community stakeholders” had informed them as many as 250 positions could be eliminated from TRADOC’s G-2 section.

Wittman, who chairs the House Armed Services tactical air and land forces subcommittee, wrote in a statement to Inside Defense this week that he has been in touch with Gen. Gary Brito, the commanding general of TRADOC, who has informed the congressman the Army is “completing an internal review process on how to integrate TRADOC and AFC.”

“It should be finalized later this month, and I look forward to reviewing a comprehensive update from Army regarding their findings and merger proposal,” Wittman wrote.

“I am committed to ensuring that TRADOC’s mission and expertise is preserved and that we provide clarity to servicemembers and civilians in Virginia as soon as possible -- these are men and women who have dedicated their lives to our country and they deserve information.”
