The Army Science Board will meet July 20 in Irving, CA, to discuss their recommendations on four studies, according to a public notice.

One study, from fiscal year 2020, titled “An Independent Assessment of the 2040 Battlefield and its Implications for 5th Generation Combat Vehicle Technologies” will be unveiled at the meeting in open session. Inside Defense previously covered the study when reporting on the Army’s efforts to replace the M1 Abrams main battle tank.

Initiated in 2019 by then-Army Secretary Mark Esper, the study was to examine emerging threats to the service’s armored vehicles, understand the future design of armored vehicles and recommend investments into the armored capabilities, according to earlier reporting.

Three other studies will also be discussed.

The first, from FY-21, titled “An Independent Assessment of the Army's Ability to Fight and Win on a Nuclear Battlefield,” is classified and will be discussed in a closed session.

The second, from FY-23, titled “Surge Capacity in the Industrial Base,” contains controlled unclassified information and will also be discussed in a closed session.

The third, “An Independent Assessment of the Army Implementation of Digital Engineering,” is not classified and will be released and discussed in an open session.
