The Army has awarded more than $81 million to the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory for research and development work, according to an Aug. 23 contract announcement.

The contract tasks APL with "maintaining an essential engineering, research, or development capability to be provided by an educational or other nonprofit institution."

The cost-plus-fixed-fee contract was awarded to APL on a non-competitive basis, and Army Space and Missile Defense Command is the contracting authority.

Spokesman John Cummings told Inside the Army Aug. 26 that the contract empowers the Army to employ task orders for specific efforts within the terms of the broader agreement.

According to the award announcement, "work locations and funding will be determined with each order, with an estimated completion date of Aug. 22, 2021."
