The Navy this week issued a $1.4 billion contract modification to Huntington Ingalls Industries for an amphibious transport dock vessel.

The funds are "for the procurement of the detail design and construction" of LPD-30, according to the contract announcement.

"Fiscal [year] 2018 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funding in the amount of [$1.37 billion] will be obligated at time of award and will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year," the announcement adds.

The Navy in August issued HII a $165.5 million award for long-lead-time materials for the ship, which is the first vessel in the LPD-17 Flight II class.

The service funded the LPD-30 in FY-18 after previous plans to buy the ship in FY-20.
