President-elect Donald Trump spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday night, according to a statement from the Trump transition team.

“During the call, the leaders established a clear sense of mutual respect for one another, and President-elect Trump stated that he believes the two leaders will have one of the strongest relationships for both countries moving forward,” according to the statement.

Meanwhile, Trump promised during his campaign that he would pursue punitive measures against China for currency manipulation and has proposed new tariffs on Chinese imports, which critics say would start a trade war. There is $650 billion in annual trade between the United States and China.
