Newport News' first 'drawing-less' ship expected to yield 15 percent cost savings

Newport News Shipbuilding plans to have the first "drawing-less" ship by CVN-80, which will yield about a 15 percent cost savings for the multibillion-dollar aircraft carrier, according to the company president. Matt Mulherin -- who heads a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries -- told reporters during a May 17 briefing at the annual Sea-Air-Space exposition that digital shipbuilding will be the future for his company.
