President-elect Donald Trump tweeted Thursday evening that "[b]ased on the tremendous cost and cost overruns of the Lockheed Martin F-35, I have asked Boeing to price-out a comparable F-18 Super Hornet!"

The tweet followed meetings Wednesday with the chief executives of Lockheed and Boeing as well as military officials, including F-35 program chief Lt. Gen. Christopher Bogdan.

Following that meeting, Lockheed CEO Marillyn Hewson released a statement calling the discussion "productive." She said she'd had the opportunity to talk about the progress the company has made in lowering the F-35's cost.

Trump said after the meeting that "we're going to get the costs down, and we're going to get it done beautifully."

Lockheed Martin's stock closed Thursday at $252.80 per share but was down about 2 percent in after-hours trading.
