New Legislation Would Expand Nonproliferation Programs Beyond Former Soviet States

Sen. Richard Lugar (R-IN) said last night he is developing legislation designed to expand the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction program to encompass countries other than Russia and former Soviet states. In a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, DC, Lugar said he has spent the past several months exploring ways to broaden the nonproliferation program to tackle the threat of weapons of mass destruction stemming from countries like India and Pakistan.
