CNO calls physiological episodes No. 1 concern in naval aviation

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson announced today the No. 1 concern in naval aviation is pilots suffering from physiological episodes.

In a video posted on Facebook the admiral described the 30-day review directed by the Naval Air Forces commander on determining a root cause for physiological episodes suffered by T-45C Goshawk, F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler pilots.

"It is an elusive problem," Richardson said.

A physiological episode occurs when the environmental control system or onboard oxygen generation system does not meet the requirement for oxygen pressure, purity or concentration. The aircrew may experience hypoxia either through insufficient oxygen or through exposure to toxic substances, according to the service.

The Navy has launched a page dedicated to physiological episodes on its website.
