Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain (R-AZ), after casting a dramatic vote to sink the GOP's attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act, is disappointed the Senate will be unable to take up the fiscal year 2018 defense authorization bill in time for the August recess.

Air Force 'Skibirds' summer in Greenland, training for Antarctica in support of science

KANGERLUSSAUQ, GREENLAND -- On the tarmac in this sleepy town 60 miles above the Arctic Circle tucked at the terminus of a dramatic fjord, an Air Force team from New York works all spring and summer flying a handful of cargo planes -- modified to operate on ice and snow -- to conduct military training and support scientific research on Greenland's ice sheet.

Air Force eyeing F-22, F-35 simulator interoperability by 2019

The Air Warfare Center at Nellis Air Force Base, NV, is working to develop a capability to connect F-22 and F-35 simulators in a common environment by 2019 -- an effort that will set the foundation for a new Virtual Test and Training Center.

AFRL plans boost to space experimentation, prototyping

The Air Force Research Laboratory plans to hold an industry day later this month to discuss a new program to reinvigorate the service's integrated space experimentation capabilities.

GAO criticizes accounting changes in DOD nuclear cost estimate

A recent Government Accountability Office analysis recommends the Defense Department make its future financial reports on nuclear costs more complete and transparent, alleging murky accounting could make it more difficult for Congress to understand how spending estimates are created and to assess the long-term affordability of nuclear sustainment and modernization.
