Mattis pledges to ask Congress for larger military in FY-19

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis plans to ask Congress to reach the bipartisan consensus needed to pass the Trump administration’s fiscal year 2018 defense budget and will pledge to follow up in FY-19 with a request that will increase the size of the military.

The Pentagon's top acquisition official has commissioned a strategic counter-autonomy assessment, directing an influential Defense Department advisory panel to consider projected autonomous threats in both the physical and information domain, identify U.S. weaknesses and recommend potential investments in new capabilities, force strategy and deterrence policy.

Three projects are underway for MDA to counter hypersonic weapons:

MDA secured last-minute FY-17 funding to support COCOM hypersonic defense request

The Defense Department in May secured a last-minute funding from Congress to immediately launch three projects to address the "emergency warfighting readiness requirement" of ensuring the Ballistic Missile Defense System can deal with hypersonic weapons, an action taken in response to a Joint Emergent Operational Need for an Advanced Threat Missile Defeat capability.

The Army is repairing Abrams tanks, Bradleys and M113s from the 81st Armored Brigade Combat Team:

AMC official: Army improving equipment for 15th ABCT

The Army is working to bring existing equipment up to standard to convert the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division to the service's 15th armored brigade combat team, according to the chief of materiel management and installation logistics division at Army Materiel Command.

The Navy declined to comment on when student pilots need to be flying before it would impact its fleet squadrons:

Davis: T-45C student pilots must return to the air no later than December

T-45C Goshawk student pilots must return to the air no later than December or the service will have "problems" with the number of fighter pilots in the fleet, according to a service official.
