Rolls-Royce said today it will spend close to $600 million to modernize its manufacturing operations in Indianapolis and to conduct technology research.

The investment, the company said, will replace outdated facilities and speed the introduction of new manufacturing approaches. The Indianapolis site is home to about 4,000 employees and is focused on defense work.

As part of the deal, Rolls-Royce said it will receive about $35 million in state and city incentives, including conditional tax credits and a skills enhancement grant.

Renovation of the existing buildings will begin immediately, Rolls-Royce said.
