Throwback Thursday -- Tanker Charges

Welcome to Throwback Thursday, InsideDefense.com's weekly look back at what was happening on this day in years past.

On July 23, 2014, Boeing executives announced the contractor would absorb a $272 million hit on the KC-46 tanker program because of unexpected engineering challenges associated with wiring the first test aircraft.

This week, Boeing announced a second charge -- this time a $536 million pre-tax hit related to reworking the integrated fuel system. During a call this week, Boeing executives stressed that the problem is well understood.

"No new technology is needed to resolve these issues," Dennis Muilenburg, Boeing's chief executive, said. "But that in no way mitigates our disappointment in having to take this charge."
